Peace

Dear Friends in Christ,

On the second Sunday of Advent, the second candle of the Advent Wreath is lit. As we look at this candle we celebrate the peace we find in Jesus Christ, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you” (John 14:27). We work for peace because Jesus is the Prince of Peace and He calls His children to work for peace in His name through the words of the prophet Isaiah (26:3), “With firm purpose you maintain peace; in peace, because of our trust in you.”

Who would not want to live in peace? The deepest want of man is not a desire for happiness, but a craving for peace; not a wish for the fulfillment of every desire, but a craving for the repose of submission in the will of God. God promises us that it is possible to be kept in peace; and He shows us how to obtain it. We must trust in Him and persevere with our mind fixed on Him. What destroys our peace is sin, imperfections, and forgetfulness of God. We forget God when our heart is divided by being in love with something else.

To remain in peace, we have to make a great effort to always do the will of God. If we fail to do His will in something, we can lose our peace. If we are living incorrectly, seeking our pleasure in worldly entertainments, once they are over, we can lose our peace and fall into sadness and depression, because God does not want us to be divided in this way, trying to serve two masters, God and mammon. Only by keeping our mind firmly fixed on God alone, with our body and soul united and actively cooperating together in this, will we be able to remain in peace. This is because God made us this way for Himself and He is the source of this peace and gives it when we focus only on Him and not on other attractions, delights, etc. This is the great secret of human happiness that few know. Most seek the delights of the world: succulent food, diversions, movies, trips, social visits, banquets, etc. Others fall in love with lust and lose their peace in this painful way. None of this is the path of peace, which so many seek in vain.

If we have failed to do God’s will in something, we have the forgiveness of sins in the death of Christ on the cross, whereby He suffered our punishment for our sins for us. This is communicated to us when we invoke Him, especially in the sacrament of reconciliation, which He left us for this purpose. Once His peace is restored, we can remain in it by living correctly according to His will. And His will is that we completely dedicate ourselves to Him with all our heart, without any division of heart among the delights and loves of this world. He wants us to live a sacrificial life, renouncing the world. We have to completely trust in God and fix our mind firmly on Him, and only on Him, if we want His gift of peace. “But I look up – up into the face of Jesus! For there my heart can rest, my fears are stilled; And perfect peace, and every hope full for darkness, And there is joy, and love, and light filled.” (Selected)

Lord, You come as a tiny, fragile baby; yet we know that You are God and You are with us. May the flame of the second candle of the Advent Wreath remind us that You are the light of the world and that if we follow You, we will never walk in darkness, but will have the true light of life and Your gift of perfect peace. Queridos Amigos en Cristo,

En el segundo domingo de Adviento, se enciende la segunda vela de la corona de Adviento. Al mirar esta vela, nosotros celeb-ramos la paz que encontramos en Jesucristo: “Les dejo la paz; les doy mi paz” (Juan 14,27). Nosotros trabajamos por la paz porque Jesús es el Príncipe de Paz y llama a sus hijos a trabajar por la paz en su nombre a través de las palabras del profeta Isaías (26:3), “Señor, tú conservas en paz a los de carácter firme, porque confían en ti.”

¿Quién no querría vivir en paz?  La neces-idad más profunda del hombre no es un deseo de felicidad, sino un anhelo de paz; no un deseo de cumplir todo deseo, sino un anhelo de reposo de sumisión en la voluntad de Dios. Dios nos promete que es posible estar en paz; y nos muestra cómo obtenerla. Debemos confiar en Él y perseverar con nuestra mente fija en Él. Lo que destruye nuestra paz es el pecado, las imperfecciones y el olvido de Dios. Nos olvidamos de Dios cuando nuestro corazón está dividido por estar enamorado de otra cosa.

Para permanecer en paz, tenemos que hacer un gran esfuerzo para hacer siempre la voluntad de Dios. Si fallamos en hacer su voluntad en algo, podemos perder nuestra paz. Si estamos viviendo incorrectamente, buscando nuestro placer en entretenimientos mundanos, una vez que hayan terminado, podemos perder nuestra paz y caer en la tristeza y la depresión.  Dios no quiere que nos dividamos de esta manera, tratando de servir a dos amos, Dios y riquezas. Sólo manten-iendo nuestra mente fijamente en Dios, con nuestro cuerpo y alma unidos y cooperando activamente juntos en esto, seremos capaces de permanecer en paz. Esto se debe a que Dios nos hizo de esta manera para Él, y Él es la fuente de esta paz. Dios la da cuando nos enfocamos solo en Él y no en otras atrac-ciones, deleites, etc. Este es el gran secreto de la felicidad humana que pocos conocen. La mayoría busca las delicias del mundo: comida suculenta, diversiones, películas, viajes, visitas sociales, banquetes, etc. Otros se enamoran de la lujuria y pierden su paz lastimosamente de esta manera. Tantos la buscan en vano y nada de esto es el camino de la paz.

Si hemos fallado en hacer la voluntad de Dios en algo, tenemos el perdón de los pecados con la muerte de Cristo en la cruz, por la cual Él sufrió nuestro castigo por nuestros pecados. Esto se nos comunica cuando lo invocamos, especialmente en el sacramento de la reconciliación, que nos dejó para este propósito.  Una vez que se restaura su paz, podemos permanecer en ella viviendo correctamente de acuerdo con su voluntad. Y su voluntad es que nos dedi-quemos completamente a Él con todo nuestro corazón, sin ninguna división entre las delicias y amores de este mundo. Él quiere que vivamos una vida de sacrificio, renun-ciando al mundo. Tenemos que confiar completamente en Dios y fijar nuestra mente en Él, y sólo en Él, si queremos su don de paz.  “Pero yo miro hacia arriba, ¡hacia el rostro de Jesús!  Porque allí mi corazón puede desc-ansar, mis temores se calman; la paz es perfecta, y toda la esperanza que estaba llena de tinieblas, se llenó de gozo y amor.” (Seleccionado)

Señor, vienes como un bebé pequeño y frágil; sin embargo, sabemos que tú eres Dios y estás con nosotros. Que la llama de la segunda vela de la Corona de Adviento nos recuerde que tú eres la luz del mundo y que, si te seguimos, nunca caminaremos en la oscuridad, sino que tendremos la verdadera luz de la vida y tu don de paz perfecta.
