Respect Life Month
Dear Friends in Christ,
During October, the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, a time in which we are invited to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from conception to its natural end.
God places special value on human life. “What is man that you are mindful of him, and a son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him little less than a god, crowned him with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:5-6). Human life is sacred because the man and woman alone were created in the image of God, and that life deserves protection. God commands His people to protect and defend innocent human life. The unborn child shares in God’s image. Christians are exhorted to defend and care for the sick, the elderly, and the poor. No one is excluded from protection and care.
Throughout history, the sanctity of all human life has faced opposition – most notably from those who advocate a “quality of life” viewpoint, suggesting that human life must possess certain qualities and abilities before it can be considered truly valuable and worthy of life sustenance. According to this distorted humanistic view, if the unborn child, the handicapped infant, or the elderly person does not possess these qualities, that individual is not entitled to the protection.
Abby Johnson, director of the Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas, watched via ultrasound as a doctor aborted a 13-week-old unborn baby by dilation and evacuation. It was the first time she viewed an abortion using the ultrasound technology. “I saw a full profile of the baby from head to foot, and in an instant it was gone.” She promptly resigned from Planned Parenthood after working there for eight years. “I can’t do this anymore,” Johnson said. She later wrote a memoir of her experiences called Unplanned: The Dramatic True Story of a Former Planned Parenthood Leader’s Eye-Opening Journey across the Life Line.
A 2015 documentary, “The Drop Box,” tells the story of Pastor Lee Jong-Rak, who founded South Korea’s first box for abandoned newborn babies. The film tells how Lee, once an ill-tempered, skirt-chasing drunk, was transformed by a loving heavenly Father to love his own child and other newborns and sick infants he discovers in his box. His own son, 29-year-old Eun-man, is the inspiration behind Lee’s ministry. He is bedridden, brain-damaged, and totally dependent. The film presents Lee’s love and care for Eun-man as either superhuman or as receiving superhuman strength from somewhere. The result is a challenge to all believers to have compassion and care for those infants and individuals who are helpless by themselves.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you” (Jeremiah 1:5). Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. God and the Church call upon us to extend our care and compassion to every life He has created, in every stage of development and in every need.

Durante el mes de octubre, la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos celebra el Mes de Respeto a la Vida, un tiempo en el que estamos invitados a reflexionar más profundamente sobre la dignidad de cada vida humana. Como católicos, estamos llamados a apreciar, defender y proteger a los más indefensos, desde la concepción hasta su fin natural.
Dios da un valor especial a la vida humana. “¿Qué es el hombre? ¿Qué es el ser humano? ¿Por qué lo recuerdas y te preocupas por él? Pues lo hiciste casi como un dios, lo rodeaste de honor y dignidad” (Salmos 8:4-5). La vida humana es sagrada porque sólo el hombre y la mujer fueron creados en la imagen de Dios, y esa vida merece protección. Dios ha ordenado a su pueblo que proteja y defienda la vida humana inocente. El niño aun no nacido comparte la imagen de Dios. Se exhorta a los cristianos a defender y cuidar a los enfermos, los ancianos y los pobres. Nadie está excluido de su protección y cuidado.
A lo largo de la historia, la santidad de toda la vida humana ha conocido la oposición, especialmente de aquellos que abogan por un punto de vista de “calidad de vida”, lo que sugiere que la vida humana debe poseer ciertas cualidades y habilidades antes de que pueda considerarse verdaderamente valiosa y digna de sustento vital. De acuerdo con esta visión humanista distorsionada, si el niño aun no nacido, el niño discapacitado o la persona mayor no poseen estas cualidades, esa persona no tiene derecho a esta protección.

La vida humana debe ser respetada y protegida absolutamente desde el momento de la concepción. Dios y la Iglesia nos llaman a extender nuestro cuidado y compasión a cada vida que Él ha creado, en cada etapa de desarrollo y en toda necesidad.
