Pastoral Letter For December
Dear Friends in Christ,
In this letter, I would like to delve into a fundamental aspect of our faith – the profound art of prayer. Yet not just any prayer; we are about to embark on a journey into the heart of the “Universal Prayer” or the “Prayer of the Faithful.” Let’s begin by envisioning prayer as a bridge. This bridge connects us with the Divine, offering a channel for communication. But this is not just any bridge; it is a bridge of compassion, connecting our hearts to the wider world and ultimately to God Himself.
When we engage in Universal Prayer during Mass, we are embracing a truly remarkable human function. It is a function that extends beyond simply offering praise or seeking personal blessings; it is a function that compels us to raise our voices on behalf of the entire world. Consider for a moment the names “Universal Prayer” and “Prayer of the Faithful.” The term “universal” beckons us to transcend our immediate concerns, encouraging us to shift our gaze beyond the boundaries of our families and friends. It challenges us to empathize with the suffering and needs of people spanning the globe.
The phrase “Prayer of the Faithful” is equally significant. It signifies a moment where each one of us, as part of the congregation, exercises our unique connection with God. It is crucial to understand that the content of this prayer is not determined by the church hierarchy but by the people in the assembly. But here is where it gets truly beautiful. In this moment, we are not just praying for fellow believers. No, we are collectively lifting our voices for the entire human family. We are interceding for the countless souls and countless challenges faced by people in their daily lives.
You see, we live in the world. Our lives are interwoven with our jobs, our families, and our communities. We are intimately familiar with what’s happening ‘out there’, and it is precisely this understanding that we bring to our prayer. The intentions we voice during the Universal Prayer emanate from the hearts of our congregation. These intentions are a tangible expression of our concerns for the world. It is our way of reaching out to God, imploring Him to intervene on behalf of humanity.
So, as we hear our fellow community members present the needs, sufferings, and challenges they witness in the world, remember this – we are not passive onlookers. No, we are active participants. We are responders. We are a collective voice, beseeching the Divine on behalf of the world. In essence, the Universal Prayer is our way of affirming our care for the world. It is our declaration, to both the world and to God, that we are not passive observers; we are proactive intercessors. We stand together, raising our voices and our hearts in prayer for the entire world.
In conclusion, the Universal Prayer serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards others. As we stand before God, we recognize that we have a duty to not only pray for ourselves but also for the whole human race. This prayer empowers us to become agents of change, to act against injustice and inequality. It encourages us to be compassionate and empathetic towards those who are struggling, to lift them up in prayer and offer our support. Moreover, the Universal Prayer allows us to express our gratitude to God for all the blessings in our lives, whether big or small. Therefore, the Universal Prayer is not just a mere ritual but a powerful tool that brings us closer to God and imbues us with the strength to make a positive impact in the world.

Con esta carta, me gustaría explorar un aspecto fundamental de nuestra fe: la profundidad de la oración. Pero no se trata de cualquier oración; estamos a punto de embarcarnos en un viaje hacia el corazón de la “Oración Universal” o la “Oración de los Fieles”. Comencemos por imaginar la oración como un puente. Este puente nos conecta con lo Divino, ofreciendo un canal de comunicación. Pero no es un puente cualquiera; es un puente de compasión, que une nuestros corazones con el mundo en general y, en última instancia, con Dios mismo.

La frase “Oración de los Fieles” es igualmente significativa. Significa un momento en el que cada uno de nosotros, como parte de la congregación, ejerce nuestra conexión única con Dios. Es crucial entender que el contenido de esta oración no está determinado por la jerarquía de la iglesia, sino por las personas en la asamblea. Pero aquí es donde se vuelve realmente hermoso. En este momento, no solo estamos rezando por nuestros compañeros creyentes. No, estamos elevando colectivamente nuestras voces por toda la familia humana. Estamos intercediendo por las innumerables almas y desafíos que enfrentan las personas en sus vidas diarias.
Verás, vivimos en el mundo. Nuestras vidas están entrelazadas con nuestros trabajos, nuestras familias y nuestras comunidades. Estamos íntimamente familiarizados con lo que está sucediendo “allá afuera”, y es precisamente esta comprensión la que llevamos a nuestra oración. Las intenciones que expresamos durante la Oración Universal emanan de los corazones de nuestra congregación. Estas intenciones son una expresión tangible de nuestras preocupaciones por el mundo. Es nuestra forma de llegar a Dios, implorándole que intervenga en nombre de la humanidad.
Así que, mientras escuchamos a nuestros compañeros de comunidad presentar las necesidades, los sufrimientos y los desafíos que presencian en el mundo, recuerda esto: no somos simples espectadores pasivos. No, somos participantes activos. Somos respondientes. Somos una voz colectiva, suplicando a lo Divino en nombre del mundo. En esencia, la Oración Universal es nuestra manera de afirmar nuestro cuidado por el mundo. Es nuestra declaración, tanto al mundo como a Dios, de que no somos observadores pasivos; somos intercesores proactivos. Estamos juntos, elevando nuestras voces y nuestros corazones en oración por todo el mundo.
