Pastoral Letter - January 2022
Dear Friends in Christ,
January is here again and as we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany to start the year, we seek out the momentum of the appearance of the three Wise Men. Matthew’s indication that the Wise Men came “from the East” suggested that they came from Persia. They saw the new star in the sky and knew it represented something grand and glorious, something very powerful and mighty, so much so that they together packed up for a very long trip. They brought some of their most prized possessions of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. When they finally arrived at the feet of the baby Jesus, they gave him praise and worship and presented these gifts to him.
The story of the Magi is really a story about how we are to live out our own spiritual journey. In this New Year, we journey together with these three Wise Men to “do everything for the glory of God” (Corinthians 10:31). First, by putting our total faith in him, resting assured that God can save us through the salvific work of his son Jesus Christ and the transforming sanctification of his Holy Spirit. Once you do that, then all the glory for your salvation will return to God. Next, glorify God by confessing your sins. Go to the sacrament of reconciliation on a regular basis to make honest confessions of your sins and turn from them toward God. The confessional is not the place of misery, but of grace – the place where the glory of God drives out misery and sin, failure and loss, arrogance and pride.
Glorify God in your worship. This is what the psalms so often call us to do. “Sing of his glorious name; give him glorious praise” (Psalm 66:2); “I will praise you with all my heart, glorify your name forever” (Psalm 86:12). Whenever we worship God, we do what we were made to do. In our prayers and praises we declare that God alone is glorious. Glorify God by your good deeds. Jesus said, “By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples” (John 15:8). The fruit Jesus had in mind is the fruit of good deeds. So give God the glory by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, healing the sick, loving the orphans, and helping everyone in need.
Glorify God by winning souls for Christ, telling other people about Jesus every chance you get. If they are led to trust God and repent for their sins, then God will have gained another worshiper. Glorify God by supporting the work of the church. Glorify God with your art and music, by what you make and what you perform. Glorify God in your hobbies by resting in his goodness. Glorify God in your work by working with all your strength. Glorify him in the menial tasks of the home. God receives glory whenever a dish is washed, a floor is mopped, a newspaper is recycled, or even a diaper is changed in his name.
In short, glorify God in any and every activity of life by doing it in his service and according to his will. If you glorify God, one day God will glorify you. The more you get into Christ, the more Christ gets into you, until eventually you are glorified all the way through. One day you will be totally glorious! Then we will spend eternity praising God for all his glorious attributes, “For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36).

Enero está aquí de nuevo y mientras celebramos la fiesta de la Epifanía para comenzar el año, buscamos el impulso de la aparición de los tres Reyes Magos. La indicación de Mateo de que los Reyes Magos venían “de Oriente” sugería que venían de Persia. Vieron la nueva estrella en el cielo y sabían que representaba algo grandioso y glorioso, algo muy grande y poderoso, tanto que juntos empacaron para un viaje muy largo. Trajeron algunas de sus posesiones más preciadas, el oro, incienso y mirra. Cuando finalmente llegaron a los pies del niño Jesús, le dieron alabanza y adoración y le presentaron estos regalos.
La historia de Magi es realmente una historia sobre cómo debemos vivir nuestro propio viaje espiritual. En este Año Nuevo, viajamos junto con estos tres Reyes Magos para “hacer todo para la gloria de Dios” (Corintios 10:31). Primero, poniendo nuestra fe total en Él, estando seguros de que Dios puede salvarnos a través de la obra salvífica de su hijo Jesucristo y la santificación transformadora de su Espíritu Santo. Una vez que hagas eso, entonces toda la gloria por tu salvación regresará a Dios. A continuación, glorifica a Dios confesando tus pecados. Ve al sacramento de la reconciliación regularmente para hacer confesiones honestas de tus pecados y entrega de ellos hacia Dios.
Glorifica a Dios en tu adoración. Esto es lo que los salmos tan a menudo nos llaman a hacer. “Canta de su glorioso nombre; dale alabanza gloriosa” (Salmo 66:2); “Te alabaré con todo mi corazón, glorificar tu nombre para siempre” (Salmo 86:12). Cada vez que adoramos a Dios, hacemos lo que fuimos hechos para hacer. En nuestras oraciones y alabanzas declaramos que sólo Dios es glorioso. Glorifica a Dios por tus buenas obras. Jesús dijo: “En esto se muestra la gloria de mi Padre, en que den mucho fruto y lleguen así a ser verdaderos discípulos míos.” (Juan 15:8). El fruto que Jesús tenía en mente es el fruto de las buenas obras. Así que dale a Dios la gloria por medio de alimentando a los hambrientos, vistiendo a los desnudos, sanando a los enfermos, amando a los huérfanos y ayudando a todos los necesitados.
Glorifica a Dios ganando almas para Cristo, diciéndole a otras personas acerca de Jesús cada vez que puedas. Si se les lleva a confiar en Dios y arrepentirse de sus pecados, entonces Dios habrá ganado otro adorador. Glorifica a Dios apoyando la obra de la iglesia. Glorifica a Dios con tu arte y música, por lo que haces y lo que realizas. Glorifica a Dios en tus pasatiempos descansando en su bondad. Glorifica a Dios en tu obra trabajando con todas tus fuerzas. Glorifícalo en las tareas serviles del hogar. Dios recibe gloria cada vez que se lava un plato, se trapea un piso, se recicla un periódico o incluso se cambia un pañal en su nombre.
En resumen, glorificar a Dios en todas y cada una de las actividades de la vida haciéndolo en su servicio y de acuerdo con su voluntad. Si glorificas a Dios, un día Dios te glorificará. Entre más menciones a Cristo, más Cristo se mete en ti, hasta que finalmente eres glorificado hasta el final. ¡Un día serás totalmente glorioso! Entonces pasaremos la eternidad alabando a Dios por todos sus gloriosos atributos.
