Pastoral Letter for March 2024

Dear Friends in Christ,

Imagine you’re in a beautiful church, surrounded by fellow Catholics, for a special event called Mass. Within this Mass, there’s a part that the Church says is the most important – it’s called the “Eucharistic Prayer.” This part has a unique place because it’s where Catholics feel a deep connection with God.

During Mass, we do several things, like sing hymns to praise God, ask for His guidance in our lives, and learn from His teachings through the readings and the homily. But when we reach the Eucharistic Prayer, it’s as if we enter a sacred space where time slows down and something extraordinary unfolds.

In that moment, we remember the remarkable story of Jesus who lived many, many years ago. Why is Jesus so special to Catholics? Well, it’s what he did: He willingly went through something incredibly momentous. He was crucified on a cross, but the truly amazing thing is that he came back to life. This event is at the heart of the Catholic faith; it’s like the key that unlocks the door to our faith.

Now, the Eucharistic Prayer isn’t just a moment of passive observation. It’s not like watching a movie or a play. It’s much more profound. It’s like being transported back in time to stand next to Jesus on the cross.

Think about it: when Jesus was on that cross, he wasn’t alone. In a spiritual sense, we were right there with Him. How did this happen? Well, through a special ceremony called baptism, we became part of Jesus’ family. It’s like we’re in the same story, sharing in His life and journey.

So when we participate in the Eucharistic Prayer during Mass, we’re being asked to do something incredibly meaningful. We’re invited to offer ourselves as Jesus did. It’s not just that Jesus does something for us; it’s that we actively participate with Jesus in his profound act of love and sacrifice.

Imagine sitting around a big table with Jesus at the center, like a family gathering. He’s sharing something very important with us, and he wants us to be a part of it. During a certain part of this prayer, the priest says words like “this is my body” and “this is the chalice of my blood” as he holds up a piece of bread and a cup of wine. It’s at these moments that we should remember that we are there with Jesus, sharing in this extraordinary experience.

By paying close attention to these words and actions, we gain a deeper understanding of the mystery of the Mass. It’s not a boring or routine event. It’s a precious opportunity for us to connect deeply with Jesus and to offer ourselves, as He did, for the good of others. It’s like coming together as one big, loving family with Jesus at the center, and the Eucharistic Prayer is where we unite with Him in a most profound way.

Here are some questions for reflection and discussion:

• When the Eucharistic Prayer includes the lifting up of the Body and Blood of Christ, what do you typically do?

• If you choose to adore Jesus when the host and chalice are raised, how might this affect your behavior after Mass? And if you focus on uniting yourself with the act of offering your body alongside His for the good of the world, how might that affect your actions after Mass?

• Can you give some real-life examples of how you can demonstrate self-sacrifice and service to others in your daily life?

Queridos Amigos en Cristo,

Imagina que estás en una hermosa iglesia, rodeado de otros católicos, para un evento especial llamado Misa. Dentro de esta Misa, hay una parte que la Iglesia dice que es la más importante - se llama la “Plegaria Eucarística”. Esta parte tiene un lugar único porque es donde los católicos sienten una profunda conexión con Dios.

Durante la Misa, hacemos varias cosas, como cantar himnos para alabar a Dios, pedir Su guía en nuestras vidas y aprender de Sus enseñanzas a través de las lecturas y la homilía. Pero cuando llegamos a la Plegaria Eucarística, es como si entráramos en un espacio sagrado donde el tiempo se ralentiza y se desarrolla algo extraordinario.

En ese momento, recordamos la extraordinaria historia de Jesús, que vivió hace muchísimos años. ¿Por qué Jesús es tan especial para los católicos? Por lo que hizo: Pasó voluntariamente por algo increíblemente trascendental. Fue crucificado en una cruz, pero lo verdaderamente asombroso es que volvió a la vida. Este acontecimiento está en el corazón de la fe católica; es como la llave que abre la puerta de nuestra fe.

Ahora bien, la Plegaria Eucarística no es sólo un momento de observación pasiva. No es como ver una película o una obra de teatro. Es mucho más profundo. Es como ser transportado atrás en el tiempo para estar junto a Jesús en la cruz.

Piénsalo: cuando Jesús estaba en la cruz, no estaba solo. En un sentido espiritual, estábamos allí con Él. ¿Cómo sucedió esto? Bueno, a través de una ceremonia especial llamada bautismo, nos convertimos en parte de la familia de Jesús. Es como si estuviéramos en la misma historia, compartiendo su vida y su viaje.

Piénsalo: cuando Jesús estaba en la cruz, no estaba solo. En un sentido espiritual, estábamos allí con Él. ¿Cómo sucedió esto? Bueno, a través de una ceremonia especial llamada bautismo, nos convertimos en parte de la familia de Jesús. Es como si estuviéramos en la misma historia, compartiendo su vida y su viaje.

Por eso, cuando participamos en la Plegaria Eucarística durante la Misa, se nos pide que hagamos algo increíblemente significativo. Se nos invita a ofrecernos como lo hizo Jesús. No se trata sólo de que Jesús haga algo por nosotros; e trata de que participemos activamente con Jesús en su profundo acto de amor y sacrificio.

Imagínate sentados alrededor de una gran mesa con Jesús en el centro, como en una reunión familiar. Está compartiendo algo muy importante con nosotros, y quiere que formemos parte de ello. Durante una parte de esta oración, el sacerdote dice palabras como “esto es mi cuerpo” y “este es el cáliz de mi sangre” mientras sostiene un trozo de pan y una copa de vino. Es en estos momentos cuando debemos recordar que estamos allí con Jesús, compartiendo esta experiencia extraordinaria.

Si prestamos atención a estas palabras y acciones, comprenderemos mejor el misterio de la Misa. No es un acontecimiento aburrido o rutinario. Es una oportunidad preciosa para conectar profundamente con Jesús y ofrecernos, como Él hizo, por el bien de los demás. Es como reunirnos en una gran y amorosa familia con Jesús en el centro, y la Plegaria Eucarística es donde nos unimos a Él de la manera más profunda.

He aquí algunas preguntas para la reflexión y el debate:

• Cuando la Plegaria Eucarística incluye la elevación del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, ¿qué haces normalmente?

• Si eliges adorar a Jesús cuando se elevan la hostia y el cáliz, ¿cómo puede afectar esto a tu comportamiento después de la Misa? Y si te centras en unirte al acto de ofrecer tu cuerpo junto al Suyo por el bien del mundo, ¿cómo podría afectar eso a tus acciones después de Misa?

• ¿Puedes dar algunos ejemplos reales de cómo puedes demostrar abnegación y servicio a los demás en tu vida diaria?
