Our Catholic Community is named in honor of the 17th century South American saint, famous for her piety, love and dedication to the poor and the sick.
Born on April 20, 1586 as Isabel de Flores, she was nicknamed Rose as a baby and took the name formally when she was confirmed. Rose wished not to marry nor attract the attention of suitors, so she cut off her hair and rubbed peppercorns on her face. She lived a life of devotion and prayer, being know to fast and perform penances often. Her dedication to her community, helping the poor and the sick, along with daily receipt of Holy Communion, made her a symbol of virtue.
St. rose of Lima died at the age of 31 on August 24, 1617. We celebrate her Feast Day on August 23.
