Eucharistic Revival

Dear Friends in Christ,

It’s Sunday Mass and you walk into the church. What are you feeling? What are you expecting? If you have kids, especially teenagers, what are they expecting? How do they feel about being there? Are they looking forward to celebrating? Or just resigned to enduring? You sit at the pews and wait for the bell to ring and for the entrance of the acolytes, lectors, deacons, and the presiding priest to begin the celebration. It seems the Mass is something the priest does. The truth is, the Mass is something Jesus does, and we are all there to do it with Him.

In the Mass, Jesus is present and acting. That is where we encounter Him – not alone, but in company with others: in a communal meal where we listen to His words together, respond to them together, and together experience His presence among us and within each one of us. The Mass holds together all who believe in Jesus Christ.

Pope Francis wrote: “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus...I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting Him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day” (The Joy of the Gospel, nos. 1, 3). The Mass is a way to do that every Sunday. All we have to do is pay attention while at Mass, understand what we are paying attention to, and enter into it.

The church wants us to experience Mass, not just to attend it. When we know how to experience Mass, our attitude towards the celebration of the Eucharist will change. Eucharist takes us and the world we live in into the reality of mystery. Eucharist makes present to us what always was, is now, and always will be. Eucharist surrounds us with the full presence of infinite God, infinite Truth, and Love. Eucharist catches us up in the action of God that explains all actions and gives them their true value. Eucharist, if we know how to experience it, makes us real.

The United States Bishops are sponsoring a three-year National Eucharistic Revival from 2022 through 2025. Starting this year 2023, we will discover some practical proposals of this Revival in our parish, St. Rose of Lima. We hope that with the understanding and implementation of the Eucharistic Revival, they will help us have a fresh look at Eucharist – to look at the Mass as if we had never seen or heard it before. If we do, we may find ourselves seeing and hearing things we have never seen or heard in our lives. We will come to experience Eucharist as the source and summit, the starting point and the high point of every week in our Christian life.

We will be at the church to offer Mass together with Jesus and others, to offer Jesus to the Father for the life of the human race, and to offer ourselves with Him and in Him. The first sign of this new look will be that you won’t wait for the presider to begin Mass. From the very first moment of the celebration, you will experience yourselves making the Mass happen. You will be doing it, living it, loving it. You will begin by entering into the first hymn, the gathering song, with enthusiasm, listening to the words of the hymn and drawing upon them to give your excitement focus. From the very first moment of the celebration, you will experience yourselves making the Mass happen. Remember that at your Baptism, you received an anointing in which you are incorporated into Christ who is anointed priest, prophet, and king. For this reason, you are there to do the Mass with Christ. You are there to make the Mass happen.

Queridos Amigos en Cristo,

Es la misa dominical. Entras a la iglesia. ¿Qué sientes? ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas, y las de tus hijos, especialmente los adolescentes?  ¿Cómo se sienten al estar allí? ¿Están deseando participar, o simplemente resignados a aguantar la misa? Te sientas en los bancos y esperas a que suene la campana y a que los acólitos, lectores, diáconos y el sacerdote celebrante comiencen la celebración. Parece que la misa es algo que celebra el sacerdote. La verdad es que la Misa es algo que Jesús celebra y todos estamos allí para celebrar con Él.

Durante la Misa, Jesús está presente y obrando. Ahí es donde lo encontramos, no solos, sino en compañía de otros: en una comida comunitaria donde juntos escuchamos sus palabras, le respondemos juntos y juntos sentimos su presencia entre nosotros y dentro de cada uno de nosotros. La Misa mantiene unidos a todos los que creen en Jesucristo.

El Papa Francisco escribió: “La alegría del evangelio llena los corazones y las vidas de todos los que encuentran a Jesús... Invito a todos los cristianos, en todas partes, precisamente en este momento, a un encuentro renovado y personal con Jesucristo, o al menos a una oportunidad para dejarse encontrar con Él. Les pido a todos que hagan sin falta esto cada día” (La alegría del Evangelio, n. 1, 3). La misa es una oportunidad para hacer esto todos los domingos. Todo lo que tenemos que hacer es estar atentos mientras estamos en Misa, entender lo que estamos escuchando atentamente y hacerla parte de nuestra fe.

La iglesia quiere que vivamos la Misa, no solo estar allí. Cuando aprendemos cómo vivir la Misa, nuestra actitud hacia la celebración de la Eucaristía cambiará. La Eucaristía nos lleva a nosotros y al mundo en el que vivimos reconocer la realidad del misterio. La Eucaristía nos muestra lo que siempre fue, es ahora y siempre será. La Eucaristía nos rodea con la presencia omnipresente de Dios infinito, su Verdad y Amor infinitos. La Eucaristía nos enseña como Dios explica todas las acciones y les da su verdadero valor. La Eucaristía, si sabemos creer en ella, nos hace auténticos.

Los obispos de los Estados Unidos están patrocinando una Conferencia Eucarística Nacional de tres años, del 2022 al 2025.  A partir de este año 2023, vamos a conocer algunas propuestas prácticas de esta Conferencia Eucarística en nuestra iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima. Esperamos que la interpretación y enseñanzas de la conferencia, nos ayude a tener un nuevo conocimiento de la Eucaristía, a presenciar la Misa como nunca la hemos presenciado o escuchado antes. Si lo hacemos, podemos encontrarnos viendo y escuchando cosas que nunca hemos visto o escuchado en nuestras vidas. Llegaremos a experimentar la Eucaristía como la fuente y la cumbre, el punto de partida y el punto culminante de cada semana en nuestra vida cristiana.

Estaremos en la iglesia para ofrecer Misa junto con Jesús y otros, para ofrecer a Jesús al Padre por la vida de la raza humana, y para ofrecernos con Él y en Él. La primera señal de es la nueva práctica será que no esperarás a que el celebrante comience la misa. Desde el primer momento de la celebración, ustedes mismos sabrán cómo empezar la Misa. Lo vas hacer, lo vas a vivir, lo vas amar. Comenzarás con el primer himno, la canción de reunión, con entusiasmo, sacando sentido de las palabras del himno y así alimentar nuestra emoción espiritual.

Desde el primer momento de la celebración, lograrán empezar la misa. Recuerda en tu bautismo, recibiste una unción en la que te unió a Cristo, que es ungido sacerdote, profeta y rey. Por esta razón, estás allí para celebrar la Misa con Cristo. Estás allí para asegurar que la Misa se celebre.
