Pastoral Letter for November, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ,

Thanksgiving holiday is approaching in the month of November. I pray that you and your family are well as we enter the winter holiday season. Thanksgiving is a time of reflection, looking back at the year that we have had and thanking God for bringing us through it a little stronger and a little wiser. Some of you may have had a difficult year, while others have found much success in their endeavors. It is but through the grace of the Lord that we are able to consider the lessons we have learned and the experiences He has given us, and to allow them to deepen our relationship with Him.

“Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). Sounds great, doesn’t it? But how can that be? Give thanks in all circumstances! Surely Paul didn’t mean that. What about pandemic? What about war? What about death? What about cancer or car accidents or rape? Are we to be thankful for these kinds of things? Yes, Paul said to give thanks in all circumstances. There is always something for which we can be thankful. Even on the darkest days there are blessings to be remembered. One of these is the continuing strength God gives us to persevere, even in the most desperate of situations. With that in mind, we can give thanks in all circumstances. If God is there with us, ready to help us triumph in spite of our circumstances, that is a great reason to feel thankful.

For many of you, your circumstances of the entire year may have been bright. If so, remember that God was your Source, and give Him the praise that He deserves. However, if your situation was bleak, God still desires your sincere thanksgiving because He knows the alternatives are passivity, depression, and possibly withdrawal from intimate fellowship with Him.

Giving thanks in everything is possible when you understand that every situation, good or evil, is used by your loving Father to further your dependence on Him and make you more like Him. We all like control; we dislike anything or anyone that disturbs our sense of security. But God is not interested in your ease or comfort. He is determined to conform you to the image of Christ through the inevitable afflictions that accompany life. Thanking God in the trials may be difficult, but when you do, His purposes and presence will illuminate your path and carry you through.

God is the source of every blessing. The Apostle James wrote, “Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). In other words, if it is good, it came from God – and if it came from God, it is good. Yet often we do not take time to acknowledge what God has done for us. One of the key ingredients in spending time with God ought to be the practice of giving thanks in all circumstances.

We at St. Rose of Lima Church are thankful for all of you and your continued dedication to fellowship and spreading the Word to those who need it most. I ask that you dip into the well of compassion and charity that God has blessed you with and share what you can with others during this season. Enjoy the comfort of family while giving to the less fortunate, spiritually and materially, so that they may know that the love of God is with us all.

Queridos Amigos en Cristo,

Ya se acerca el Dia de Acción de Gracias en noviembre. Yo rezo para que ustedes y sus familias estén bien al llegar las fiestas del invierno. El Día de Gracias es un tiempo de reflexión, viendo atrás al año que hemos tenido y agradeciéndole a Dios por ayudarnos a través de Él ser más fuertes y un poco más sabios. Algunos de ustedes pueden haber pasado un año difícil, mientras otros tuvieron mucho éxito en sus esfuerzos. Es sólo a través de la gracia del Señor que somos capaces de ver las lecciones que hemos aprendido y las experiencias que Él nos ha dado, y permitir que nuestra relación con Él sea más profunda.

“Oren sin cesar. Den gracias a Dios por todo, porque esto es lo que Él quiere de ustedes como creyentes en Cristo Jesús” (1 Tesalonicenses 5,17-18). Parece genial, ¿no? Pero ¿cómo puede ser esto? ¡Da gracias por todas las circunstancias! Seguramente Pablo no quiso decir eso. ¿Qué pasa con la pandemia? ¿Qué pasa con la guerra? ¿Qué pasa con la muerte? ¿Qué pasa con el cáncer, los accidentes automovilísticos o las violaciones? ¿Debemos estar agradecidos por este tipo de incidentes? Sí, Pablo dijo que diéramos gracias en todas las circunstancias, porque siempre hay algo por lo que debemos estar agradecidos. Incluso en los días más oscuros tenemos bendiciones para recordar. Una de ellas es la fuerza continua que Dios nos da para perseverar, incluso en las situaciones más desesperadas. Con esto en mente, podemos dar gracias en todas las circunstancias. Si Dios está con nosotros, listo para ayudarnos a triunfar a pesar de nuestras circunstancias, esa es una gran razón para sentirnos agradecidos.

Para muchos de ustedes, sus circunstancias de todo el año pueden haber sido buenas. Si es así, recuerda que Dios fue tu Fundamento, y dale la alabanza que Él se merece. Sin embargo, si su situación fue triste Dios todavía desea tus sinceras gracias porque Él sabe que las alternativas son la pasividad, la depresión y posiblemente hasta alejarte de Él.

Dar gracias en todo es posible cuando entiendes que cada situación, buena o mala, es utilizada por tu Padre amoroso para promover tu dependencia de Él y hacerte más como Él. A todos nos gusta el control; no nos gusta que nada ni nadie perturbe nuestra seguridad. Pero Dios no está interesado en lo fácil o la comodidad. Él está decidido a amoldarte a la imagen de Cristo a través de las inevitables aflicciones que son parte de la vida. Agradecerle a Dios en las pruebas puede ser difícil, pero cuando lo haces, sus propósitos y presencia iluminarán tu camino y te llevarán a Él.

Dios es la fuente de toda bendición. El Apóstol Santiago escribió: “Todo lo bueno y perfecto que nos dan, viene de arriba, de Dios, que creó los astros del cielo” (Santiago 1:17). En otras palabras, si es bueno, vino de Dios, y si vino de Dios, es bueno. Sin embargo, seguido no nos tomamos el tiempo para reconocer lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros. Uno de los ingredientes clave para pasar tiempo con Dios debemos dar gracias en todas las circunstancias.

Nosotros en la Iglesia de la Santa Rosa de Lima estamos muy agradecidos por todos ustedes y su continua dedicación al compañerismo y por compartir la Palabra a quienes más lo necesitan. Les pido que se metan en el manantial de compasión y caridad con el que Dios los ha bendecido y compartan lo que puedan con otros durante esta temporada. Disfruta el calor de la familia mientas compartes con los menos afortunados, espiritual y materialmente, para que puedan saber que el amor de Dios está con todos nosotros.
