Pastoral Letter - Ascension of the Lord 2022
Dear Friends in Christ,
A group of Japanese high school students were on a tour of the United States. As they went through busy air terminals, bus and railway stations, their leader told them, “I will hold a Japanese flag high above my head as we walk our way through the crowds. Just keep an eye on that flag, and you won’t get lost!” When the group returned to Japan, a teacher asked them, “What is the one thing you remember most about your trip to the United States of America?” “The Japanese flag!” they chorused in unison.
Christ is our flag, and on this day we look to Him as He ascends into heaven. The slogan for Christians that go together with the victorious flag of the ascended Christ is, “You will be my witnesses.” The marks of a Christian on the words of the optional second reading from the letter to the Hebrews (9:24-28; 10:19-23) are humility, devotion, and obedience.
Humility – It means a quiet recognition of the capacities which God has given you balanced by your limitations. It means knowing your shortcomings, but making a full and responsible use of your abilities to the glory of God. Make this insight your own: Stop competing with others. Rather, remember that it is required in stewards that a person be found faithful – not always effective or successful, but faithful.
Devotion – Can you honestly say that your life is one characterized by devotion? The real problem is that many of us don’t see a need for or a value from the sacraments and daily use of God’s Word. Even so, God wants to bless us every day through the means He uses is His Sacraments and Words. Spend time with Him in the Eucharist, Confession, Eucharistic Adoration, Bible, and you will know and experience the blessings, the strength, joy, and peace He has for you.
Obedience – As Christ was obedient to His heavenly Father, we ought to be obedient to Him. How do you and I learn such obedience? By suffering! Saint Peter indicated in his first letter (2:20-21), “If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.” Pain and suffering do draw you closer to God.
Brothers and sisters! Your life lies ahead of you. There are many unknowns. For many of the questions you have, you have no answers. But you do have the Answerer, the ascended Christ, with you. He is by your side, every step of the way. Do you really need anything more?

Queridos amigos en Cristo,
Un grupo de estudiantes de secundaria japoneses estaban de gira por los Estados Unidos. Mientras pasaban por las concurridas terminales aéreas, estaciones de autobuses y trenes, su líder les dijo: “Sostendré una bandera japonesa en lo alto de mi cabeza mientras nos abrimos paso entre las multitudes. ¡Solo mantengan la vista en esa bandera, y no se perderán!” Cuando el grupo regresó a Japón, un maestro les preguntó: “¿Qué es lo que más recuerdan de su viaje a los Estados Unidos de América?” “¡La bandera japonesa!”, corearon al unísono.
Cristo es nuestra bandera, y en este día lo miramos mientras asciende al cielo. El lema para los cristianos que van junto con la bandera victoriosa del Cristo ascendido es: “Ustedes serán mis testigos”. Las marcas de un cristiano sobre las palabras de la segunda lectura opcional de la carta a los Hebreos (9:24-28; 10:19-23) son la humildad, la devoción y la obediencia.
Humildad – Significa un reconocimiento silencioso de las capacidades que Dios te ha dado equilibrado por tus limitaciones. Significa conocer tus defectos, pero hacer un uso pleno y responsable de tus habilidades para la gloria de Dios. Esta idea es tuya: Deja de competir con los demás. Más bien, recuerde que se requiere en los mayordomos que sean una persona fiel, no siempre efectiva o exitosa, pero fiel.
Devoción – ¿Puedes decir honestamente que tu vida se caracteriza por la devoción? El verdadero problema es que muchos de nosotros no vemos la necesidad o el valor de los sacramentos y el uso diario de la Palabra de Dios. Aun así, Dios quiere bendecirnos todos los días a través de lo que quiere decir el usar sus Sacramentos y Palabras. Pasa tiempo con Él en la Eucaristía, la Confesión, la Adoración Eucarística, la Biblia, y conocerás y experimentarás las bendiciones, la fuerza, el gozo y la paz que él tiene para ti.
Obediencia – Así como Cristo fue obediente a su Padre celestial, nosotros debemos ser obedientes a Él. ¿Cómo aprendemos tú y yo tal obediencia? ¡Por el sufrimiento! San Pedro indicó en su primera carta (2,20-21): “Si sufren por haber hecho el bien, y soportan con paciencia el sufrimiento, eso es agradable a Dios. Pues para esto los llamó Dios, ya que Cristo sufrió por ustedes, dándoles un ejemplo para que sigan sus pasos.” El dolor y el sufrimiento te acercan más a Dios.
¡Hermanos y hermanas! Tu vida está por delante de ti. Hay muchas incógnitas. Para muchas de las preguntas que tienes, no tienes respuestas. Pero sí tienes al Contestador, al Cristo ascendido, contigo. Él está a tu lado, en cada paso del camino. ¿Realmente necesitas algo más?
